Having fun at home is one of the easiest and most practical ways to save money. You don’t waste money driving to a destination, buying food or paying for entertainment.

Many frugal families have a regular family night,  where good times and good food go hand in hand.

Sometimes though, you need to change things up a bit…just to keep everyone happy and looking forward to a special night of frugal family fun.

This is why sweet peppered popcorn was invented! Our family nights had gotten a little boring and predictable.

Pizza and movies…movies and pizza…every Friday.

Sadly, we kind of lost interest in family night for awhile.

It was an important tradition to bring back though. Our older kids had gotten to enjoy family night for years, and I wanted our two youngest kids to have the same experience.

So I changed things up!

We didn’t always have to have pizza!

We didn’t always have to watch movies!

What was important was that we spent time together, relaxing and making memories.

I did want the kids to be excited about it though, so I began trying new recipes.

For the past few years, we’ve been trying to eat healthier.

We try to make the best choices available,  and stick to the 80/20 rule as much as possible.

One of the switches we made was to homemade popcorn instead if microwave popcorn. I wanted to be able to control what was on it…like the amount and quality of the salt.

The kids were not happy at first! Microwave popcorn was a snack that they could make themselves, and taking that away from them was a big change.

Luckily, I found this popcorn maker, which is easy to use and really built to last.

I have not yet had to replace mine, and can’t even guess how many times it’s been used. Hundreds of times…at least…many times by hungry teenagers or impatient pre-teens!

We also started using Himalayan pink salt as our regular table salt.  It has so much flavor, we end up using a lot less than we used to.

Local raw honey is my sweetener of choice, and it’s what I use in sweet peppered popcorn.

But why pepper?

Because honey and pepper are an awesome flavor combination!

Sweet and spicy just work together!

First, make your popcorn. If you are using a Whirley-Pop, use about 2 tablespoons of olive oil and 1/3 cup of popcorn kernels.

Turn the crank steadily,  and in just a couple of minutes, you’ll have perfect, fluffy popcorn.

Pour your popcorn over into a large bowl.

Combine 3 tablespoons of butter and about a tablespoon and a half of raw honey in a microwave save bowl. If you want your sweet peppered popcorn to be less sweet…or more sweet…you can easily adjust these measurements, just keep the ratio 2:1.

Melt the butter/honey mixture on a low setting in the microwave. Then stir to combine.

Slowly pour the honey butter over your popcorn, stirring as you pour.Sweet peppered popcorn! Yeah...it's a thing! And it's delicious! Think kettle corn...with an extra little layer of pizzazz!

Next, add salt and pepper.

Last…add more pepper.

Sweet peppered popcorn replaces dessert and adds a spicy, crunchy treat to family night, or any night!

What strange flavor combinations do you enjoy? Leave me a comment to let me know.  I’m always looking for new ideas.
